Colima is one of five states in the western region of Mexico (Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Nayarit, and Colima) where one in four people between the ages of 12 and 65 report being active smokers, placing this region second in the country for this category, according to the Colima State Health Department.

According to data from the National Commission for Mental Health and Addictions (Conasama), smoking is most prevalent in Mexico City, where three out of ten people in this age range smoke, followed by the northeastern region (Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, and San Luis Potosí) with a prevalence of 24.6 percent.

The department adds that there are 17.5 million smokers nationwide and that each person identified as an active smoker consumes an average of seven cigarettes per day annually. That is, approximately 127 packs of twenty cigarettes per year.

People with this addiction who wish to receive free treatment can go to the Community Mental Health and Addiction Centers in Colima (República de Cuba Street, corner of Pastizales Street, no number, in the Mirador de la Cumbre II neighborhood); in Manzanillo (Amado Nervo Street 551, Nuevo Salagua subdivision); and in Tecomán (Laguna de Jabalí Street, corner of Laguna de Juluapan Street, no number, in the Primaveras del Real neighborhood).
