Two women were shot and killed early Saturday morning, January 31, in the city of Colima, Colima.
The murders occurred inside a home in the Placetas Estadio neighborhood in the city center. Around 4:30 a.m., armed men entered the residence and repeatedly shot the women.
The victims were identified as Sheila María Eugenia Amezcua Delgado, 49, and María Eugenia Delgado Guizar, 72, cousin and aunt, respectively, of the Secretary of Public Education (SEP), Mario Delgado Carrillo.
Felipe Delgado, a congressman from the Green Party of Mexico (PVEM) and brother of Mario Delgado, confirmed via social media that one of the victims was his aunt and that she sold food for a living.
The PVEM congressman also noted that a nearby location, known as “Picadero,” contained an abandoned house.
“My aunt was constantly having problems because drug addicts would jump onto her roof while high. I reported it repeatedly to the authorities, but nothing was done,” he stated in the same post.
Hours later, Mario Delgado confirmed the women’s relationship and lamented their murder.
According to reports, armed men broke into the home, located on Río Salado Street, where the women were, early Saturday morning.
The assailants shot both women and fled the scene. Neighbors heard the gunshots and alerted the authorities.
Upon arriving at the scene, emergency and security personnel confirmed that both women showed no vital signs.
Three Suspected Attackers Killed After Shootout
Following the events, the Colima Public Security Secretariat reported that three suspected accomplices in the double homicide of the women were killed during follow-up and investigative work in the capital.
After conducting forensic work, and with support from the Colima Coordination, Command, Control, Communications, Computing, and Intelligence Center (C5i), authorities identified the vehicle used in the crime and located some of the individuals involved in the attack.
Federal and state security forces carried out a search operation that led to the discovery of a light blue Chevrolet Groove at a residence in the Punta Diamante neighborhood of the municipality of Villa de Álvarez.
Upon approaching the location, the officers were fired upon, triggering a shootout that resulted in three deaths and one State Attorney General’s Office agent being wounded.
After cordoning off the area, officers located weapons and various pieces of evidence inside the house that matched the videos showing the alleged perpetrators of the women’s murders, including the clothing worn during the crime and a sledgehammer.
The Colima State Police (SSP) reported that the double homicide is being investigated under the femicide protocol and with a gender perspective.
