Public safety in the state of Colima is once again under international scrutiny after the U.S. State Department renewed its travel advisory due to terrorism, criminal activity, and the risk of kidnapping.
The advisory underscores the risk posed by armed groups, drug cartels, and gangs operating actively in the region. It notes that most of the reported homicides are linked to clashes between these organizations, although collateral casualties among the civilian population have also been reported.
The alert is reinforced by the fact that cases of kidnapping of U.S. citizens and legal residents have been reported.
As a precautionary measure, the U.S. government has limited the movement of its personnel in Colima.
