Members of the Mexican Army and the Ministry of the Navy (Semar) have taken over patrol duties on the streets of the municipalities of Colima, Villa de Álvarez, Tecomán, and Manzanillo due to a technical strike by the State Preventive Police (PEP).
Since last Friday, PEP officers have publicly announced their intention to protest for a salary increase, a change in social security system, and better working conditions.
However, they had given a deadline until this Monday to resolve their demands or carry out a “technical strike” of many of their duties, such as street patrols.
According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), Colima is the state with the highest rate of intentional homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, with 121.90 cases. Morelos is second with 67.41 cases in 2024.
The Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) of the Colima state government announced that talks are progressing with the operational personnel of the State Preventive Police, who are currently suspended from work.
Services, patrols, and all activities related to public safety “are covered thanks to this coordination between the various levels of government,” they stated.
The Secretary of Public Security, Rear Admiral Gerardo Romero Santana, has coordinated patrols with state personnel and with the support of the Federation and municipalities. He has also maintained ongoing dialogue with representatives of the police personnel, as well as with various state government institutions, such as the Undersecretary of Administration, to reach agreements.
Likewise, the “SSP reiterates its recognition of police work and reminds citizens of the importance of using the emergency number or the 089 anonymous reporting line to report any incident that may constitute a crime or endanger the safety of Colima residents.”
