A small plane carrying nearly half a ton of cocaine was located and seized by members of the Armed Forces and federal security forces in the town of Tecomán, Colima, after its illegal entry from El Salvador was detected.
The Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) reported that the action was carried out as a result of surveillance and protection of Mexican airspace by CENAVI personnel, who detected the trace of a plane 200 kilometers south of San Salvador, El Salvador, heading to Mexico.
Upon entering Mexican airspace, the plane failed to comply with current aviation regulations, prompting an alert.
To locate it, six planes and a helicopter were deployed from two aerial platforms to intercept the plane. Security personnel from Colima were also dispatched to potential landing sites.
The aircraft was located when it landed on a clandestine airstrip in the town of Tecomán, Colima, where three men—whose identities have not been released—were arrested and 11 packages containing 427 kilograms of cocaine were seized.
Authorities indicated that this seizure had a financial impact on the criminal organizations of 95.8 million pesos.
The three detainees and the seized items were handed over to the corresponding Public Prosecutor’s Office to determine their legal status.
A second seizure was carried out, with security personnel at the port of Pichilingue in La Paz, Baja California Sur, locating more than a ton of methamphetamine during a gamma ray search in the back of a tractor-trailer.
The action was carried out by security officers when they stopped the driver of a truck attached to a box with California license plates, which had left Mazatlán, Sinaloa, and was traveling to the state aboard a ferry.
The officers searched the truck bed using non-intrusive Gamma Ray equipment and with the assistance of a canine, and discovered that 575 cardboard boxes containing 1,100 kilos of methamphetamine were hidden in the wooden floor.
The 24-year-old driver of the tractor-trailer was arrested by authorities. Both the drugs and the man were handed over to the corresponding Public Ministry agent to determine their legal status.
