The State Civil Protection Unit (UEPC) identified 48 flood risk points in Colima ahead of the start of the rainy season, according to its head, Erick González.

In this context, he urged municipalities to begin dredging work in rivers and streams, in addition to inspecting trees that could pose a danger to the population.

“It is essential to begin special civil protection programs as soon as possible. We will issue requests to the municipalities to carry out cleanup and prevention work,” stated González, who also announced the call from the State Civil Protection Council to establish additional measures.

Three hurricanes are expected to hit Colima.

Beginning next Monday, May 12, temporary shelters in the state will be inspected to assess their operating conditions and update the person responsible for each space. These actions will be carried out in coordination with the state DIF (National Institute of Natural Resources), SEDENA (National Secretariat of Natural Resources), and municipal Civil Protection units.

According to the forecast from the National Meteorological Service (SMN), an increase in the number of cyclones is expected in the Mexican Pacific basin in 2025. At least three of them are expected to directly affect the state of Colima, said Ernesto Paulino Santana, deputy technical director of the National Water Commission (Conagua) in the state.

“Although the probability is low, all Colima residents are aware of the damage these phenomena can cause. If the SMN indicates the possibility of impact on our coasts or neighboring states, it is essential to remain vigilant, follow the social media channels of Civil Protection and the National Meteorological Service, where the forecast is constantly updated based on the trajectory of the phenomenon, and prioritize prevention,” the official emphasized.

The Pacific Ocean would be the epicenter of more cyclones

During a meeting broadcast on the official Facebook account, Civil Protection authorities stated that, according to global statistical data, the Pacific side would be the most active area of the cyclone basin, which will therefore experience greater numbers of tropical storms.

The information highlighted that approximately 20 tropical cyclones are expected; nine tropical storms; five Category 1 and 2 hurricanes; and six major hurricanes, between Categories 3, 4, and 5.
