20 containers carrying gold, silver, and zinc stolen in Manzanillo, Colma

On Saturday, June 5th, a group of armed men entered the facilities of a transport company in the port of Manzanillo, Colima, to steal 20 containers carrying bulk gold, silver, and zinc, which they managed to steal through an operation that lasted approximately eight hours.

The events occurred during the early hours of Saturday, June 5, in the operations yard of the Alonso Mireles Maneuvers company (MAM).

The criminals took control of the security guards, then they subdued the yard coordinators who were working in the place at the time of the robbery, while four truck drivers were also momentarily taken as hostages.

According to the official version, the workers were stripped of their cellphones and held incommunicado inside the watchman’s room to prevent them from giving notice to the police of what was happening in the place.

Subsequently, the armed individuals used specialized equipment to cut the padlocks and security devices of several containers.

The Attorney General of the State of Colima (FGE) undertook the corresponding investigations to clarify the facts and find those responsible for the robbery, which was joined by personnel from the National Guard (GN) and the Secretary of the Navy (Semar), which is the federal corporation responsible for port security.

More than a week after the theft of the 20 containers, municipal, state and federal authorities have not made any comments on the issue, and have not presented any information whatsoever on this case.

Container theft has greatly increased in recent years, and it has been linked to the presence of various organized crime groups in Colima, a territory that is currently the site of a dispute between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the new cartel of Colima, a criminal association that is also known as Los Mezcales.

There is a high probability that it was an inside job since the criminals knew in advance which containers were carrying the gold, silver, and zinc.
